Graduation procedure Erasmus School of Economics

The master's defenses take place on campus. If there are reasons why you cannot defend your thesis in person, you can submit a request for an online defence to the examination board.

You can do this by logging in to OSIRIS student, to the tab 'Cases'. Click on 'My cases', then click on 'Start a new case' at the top right and select the case 'Request Online Master Thesis Defence'.

For physical defences, the following procedure applies:
After your supervisor has approved your Master thesis via the Thesis Workflow, you will receive an email from the Thesis Workflow at your student email address.

You can only request your defence if all your results have been processed in Osiris (except your thesis result) and you have received the approval from the Thesis Workflow.

After this you log in to OSIRIS student and go to the tab 'Cases'. Click on 'My cases', then click on 'Start a new case' at the top right and select the case 'ESE Application for master’s degree Erasmus School of Economics'.

Before you fill in the application form, first discuss with your supervisor when you can defend your thesis.

After consulting with your supervisors, you fill in the application form for the master’s exam, indicating your agreed date and time.

Within 2 to 3 working days, you will receive an approval or rejection on your student e-mail address.

You can check the availability of the examination rooms via the guide below.

You cannot reserve multiple hours unless you must defend 2 Masters or a 2nd specialisation.
(Please note that the time may change due to unforeseen circumstances)

Your thesis defence takes about 1 hour.

Graduation dates ESE

For both students and supervisors, it is important to realise that in general there are five weeks between the moment that the final version of the thesis is submitted and the defence of the thesis.

Registrations must *be received at *least 2 weeks before the requested graduation date on the appropriate form.

Graduation day ESE

To ensure that the graduation day and the presentation of your diploma proceed smoothly, we have set out several matters. This protocol applies to students who are taking the master’s exam.

  • The graduation ceremony takes place in one of the examination rooms in the Erasmus building (A).
  • On this day you must report to room AB-11 fifteen minutes before the start of the examination session.
  • When your defence of your thesis is public, your guests are allowed to attend.
  • In the thesis discussion, you first explain your research, the methods and the conclusions as formulated in your thesis in about 15 minutes, after which the thesis committee will ask you questions.
  • Then the committee leaves the examination room, where they will deliberate on the final grade, so that you and your guests can wait there for their return
  • When your thesis grade has been determined, the festive part of the ceremony begins
  • The committee will provide you with feedback and your supervisor will give a small speech. You then receive your diploma, list of marks and a supplement
  • Afterwards there is an opportunity to congratulate in the hall

There are various restaurants on the university complex where you can continue the festivities. It is advisable to inquire about the possibilities in advance and to make reservations in time.

Check the website for the possibilities.

On behalf of the Team Study Progress & Diplomas we wish you a happy day!
