Terminating enrolment

Termination of enrollment during the academic year

If you wish to terminate your studies at Erasmus University during an academic year, you must inform us via Studielink. Deregistration will take effect at the beginning of the month following the month in which the deregistration request was submitted via Studielink. In the case of graduation, deregistration will take effect at the beginning of the month following the month in which the graduation date is registered.
Please note:

  • If you deregister and/or graduate later than 1 June, it is not necessary to deregister yourself in Studielink. We will let your enrolment continue until 31 August. There is no possibility for a reimbursement, and you will then still be entitled to any study financing and public transport allowances.
  • Deregistration with retrospective effect is not possible.
  • 'Deregistration' is only part of the overall graduation process.

Determine whether it makes sense to deregister prematurely:

  • You will not be refunded tuition fees if you deregister on 1 July or 1 August.
  • Deregistration with retrospective effect is not possible.
  • You may not deregister if you are still receiving education or counselling from the university.
  • Results obtained in a month when you were not enrolled are invalid.
  • The right to study financing, a loan from DUO and/or a public transport travel product will cease during the period you are not enrolled.
  • If you have a residence permit based on your studies at the EUR, your right to this permit will lapse during the period you are no longer enrolled.
  • If you deregister, your ERNA account will be deactivated, and you will no longer have access to educational information and your e-mail.
  • If you deregister before 1 February due to a negative provisional study advice in your first year of study, you will not receive a binding study advice (does not apply to the Medicine programme).
  • Please note! Are you considering deregistering from a pre-master's programme? Please note that this may have consequences for the amount of the fee you have paid and/or for the possibility to reregister free of charge (if applicable).
  • For more information, please contact the ESSC.

Students who graduate should deregister from their programme in a timely manner. Being enrolled unnecessarily can cause problems, such as having to pay back study financing and the student travel product.

Moment of deregistration:

  • Students must submit a request for deregistration due to graduation to Studielink as soon as there is a prospect of graduation.
  • The deregistration request should be made at the beginning of the month following the month when the last educational activity (e.g. an examination) is completed by the student. The deregistration request always concerns a date in the future. A request to deregister due to graduation with retrospective effect is not possible.
  • Students do not have to wait until the final grade is registered in Osiris if they request deregistration due to graduation.
  • The deregistration request is only processed by the university after the final grade has been recorded in Osiris.
  • No tuition fees will be refunded for the months of July and August. If your graduation date falls in June, July or August, it may therefore be wiser to remain enrolled until 31 August (end of the academic year). You will then namely retain the right to the products offered by DUO.

Example 1:

Student has her final exam on 15 January. On 16 January, she submits a request to deregister due to graduation via Studielink on 1 February. The grade for the exam is registered in Osiris on 5 February with a pass date of 15 January. The university deregisters the student with effect from 1 February and refunds any tuition fees paid over the remaining months.

Example 2:

Student has her final examination on 15 January. On 16 January, she submits a request for deregistration due to graduation via Studielink with effect from 1 February. The grade for the exam is insufficient and the student must use the re-sit option on 2 April. The grade for the re-sit exam is sufficient and is registered in Osiris on 18 April with a pass date of 2 April. The student's deregistration request is held by the university until this moment The student is then deregistered by the university as of 1 May.

  • Log in to Studielink
  • Follow the step-by-step plan from Studielink
  • Report to DUO that you have deregistered yourself if you receive study financing, study loan and/or OV travel product from DUO.

The processing of your deregistration request and the possible refund of overpaid tuition fees will take four to ten weeks. If you pay your tuition fees in instalments, the direct debit will continue until we have processed your deregistration request. On your personal Studielink page you can see when you have been deregistered. The status has then changed to 'deregistered'.

Refund of tuition fees:

If you deregister from the EUR during the academic year, you may be entitled to a refund of overpaid tuition fees. Tuition fees for the months you were enrolled will never be refunded.
There will never be a refund for deregistrations per 1 July or 1 August.

Calculation example tuition fee refund:

Total tuition fees for one year of enrolment €12000 has been paid by student. Student submits deregistration request via Studielink on 3 December. He is no longer enrolled from 1 January. Student has been enrolled for 4 months (September to December) and owes tuition fees for that period. The student will be refunded the overpaid tuition fees for the months January to August.
When recalculating tuition fees, whole months and twelfths are used. In this example, the student will get back 8/12ths of €12000 for the 8 months he is no longer enrolled. That is €8000.
