General feedback is feedback that is not directed at a specific student’s work. It addresses common strengths, areas for improvement, and/or examples that apply to the whole group. It can be provided through a knowledge clip, a general written overview, or during a lecture or working group.

Working with general feedback supports feedback literacy by helping students identify relevant points, link them to quality criteria, and turn them into concrete improvements.

However, students may find it challenging to apply general feedback to their own assignment. In the activity from feedback to action, students reflect on the general feedback points and determine which ones are relevant to their own work, translating them into concrete action points.

When giving general feedback, present it per rubric criterion. This helps students identify action points and areas for improvement for each specific part of their work.
