Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) has a unique research profile in the social and behavioural sciences, law, economics and business administration, as well as medical sciences. Both fundamental and engaged research make a significant contribution to our mission to create a positive societal impact. Together with other knowledge institutions and various partners in society, we generate knowledge and tackle complex societal challenges.

Engaged and impact-driven research embedded in our vision

For many years, the university has placed a strong emphasis on engaged and impact-driven research. Through our Vision & Strategy 2030, we aim to enhance our societal impact. To this end, we are developing initiatives at both faculty and central levels, with support from among others ERS (Engagement and Research Services).

Teaming up for engaged research

Our focus on impact and engagement is reflected in the way we conduct our research. For example, in our use of participatory research methods and the adoption of citizen science.

The Erasmus Initiatives research programmes and countless other research groups and initiatives focus on impact and engagement and are committed to inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration.

Local and regional collaboration

The EUR has several partnerships with the City of Rotterdam. The main aim is to draw on both scientific knowledge and practical experience to address urban social issues and underpin municipal policy. For example, the Kenniswerkplaatsen (KWPs) such as the Kenniswerkplaats Leefbare Wijken (Knowledge Workshop Liveable Neighbourhoods, only in Dutch). In addition, EUR researchers are involved in a range of topics within various regional partnerships.

Collaboration with other educational institutions

When it comes to engaged and impact-driven research, EUR often joins forces with other educational institutions. Examples of strategic partnerships include Convergence and the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities (LDE) alliance as well as HIER (Hub for Impactful and Engaged Research), a coordinating network connecting Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of Technology, Leiden University, Erasmus Medical Center, and Leiden University Medical Center.
