Generative AI in research

Responsible use, prompting, and AI tools for EUR researchers

Learn how to use Generative AI (GenAI) in research responsibly with this introductory e-module from University Library. Designed for researchers and research support staff, the module explains what GenAI is, which tools are available at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), how to write effective prompts, and how GenAI can support different stages of the research process.
The Generative AI in research e-module helps you, as a researcher, understand these opportunities and risks, so you can make informed decisions about using GenAI responsibly in your research work.

Generative AI is increasingly used in research for writing, editing, coding, literature discovery, communication, and developing ideas both in and outside of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). At the same time, GenAI has significant limitations. It can generate inaccurate information, reproduce bias, raise copyright concerns, and create privacy or security risks when sensitive or confidential information is entered into unsuitable tools.

What will you learn?

The Generative AI in Research e-module introduces researchers and research support staff to the responsible use of GenAI in research.

After completing this 60–90 minute e-module, you will be able to:

  • Explain what Generative AI is and how Large Language Models (LLMs) work.
  • Write effective prompts for research-related tasks.
  • Identify suitable GenAI tools available at EUR.
  • Recognise common risks and limitations of GenAI, including hallucinations, bias, copyright issues, and privacy concerns.
  • Assess when and how GenAI can be used responsibly within your research, and when it should not be used.

Who is this e-module for?

This e-module is intended for:

  • EUR researchers who want to understand how GenAI can support parts of the research process.
  • PhD candidates and early-career researchers exploring responsible GenAI use.
  • Research support staff who advise researchers about GenAI tools, risks, and good practice.
  • EUR staff who want a practical introduction to Large Language Models and their use in a research context.
