Copyright Information Point

Park Noord, campus Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam

Welcome to the Copyright Information Point (CIP) of the University Library of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Copyright plays an important role in education and research. Teachers, researchers and even students create works protected by copyright and regularly use the works of others, for example in educational materials, scientific publications, presentations and theses. The CIP provides information and advice on copyright questions that may arise.

Are you looking for information about the options for making scientific publications openly accessible? Then view the Library's Open Access pages.

Copyright

Copyright is an intellectual property right. In the Netherlands, copyright is regulated in the Copyright Act (Dutch only).

What copyright entails

  • Copyright gives the creator or other copyright holder the exclusive right to publish or reproduce a copyrighted work.
  • This includes, for example, publishing, distributing, copying or making a work available online.

How copyright arises

  • Copyright arises automatically as soon as a work is created and meets the conditions for copyright protection.
  • Registration or other formalities are not required.

Duration of copyright

  • Copyright does not apply indefinitely.
  • In principle, it expires 70 years after the death of the maker.
  • Special rules apply to the calculation of this period and to certain categories of works.
  • After the copyright has expired, the work is in the public domain and can in principle be used freely.
