Last Saturday the very popular Korean boyband BTS came to the Netherlands for the first time to give a concert at the Ziggo Dome. Hundreds of young adults were already waiting in line very early in the morning. For this occasion the Dutch NOS and Jeugdjournaal, the Dutch children’s news programme, asked dr. Simone Driessen about fan culture.
Driessen has done a lot of research on fan culture. She stated to the news programme about BTS’ fan culture and how it is very prominent online, using social media websites such as Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.
One thing the fans often do is using special hashtags to bring awareness to the newest BTS music videos. They also do marathons in which fans watch their music videos on YouTube over and over, in order to have BTS stay on top, and the fans as well.
