Would you like to improve your English language skills? The Language & Training Centre (LTC) has developed a number of courses specifically aimed at employees of Erasmus University
Rotterdam. These courses focus on speaking or writing skills. The specific content of our courses will be tailored to meet the individual needs of each participant.

Courses usually consist of 8 weekly sessions of 2 hours each. If you need to demonstrate your newly acquired proficiency at the end of the course, we can arrange an exam for you. Upon passing the exam, you will receive a certificate indicating your achieved level.

Please note: lunch and drinks are not provided for the courses. Please make sure to have lunch before hand or bring something with you.

The goal of this course is to improve the level of both your written and oral skills up to level  A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). You will practise a variety of work-related writing activities like: learning how to greet, telephoning, asking for help or advice, exchanging information, making an appointment and writing a short email or text. 

  • To be admitted to this course both your current level of oral and written skills need to be at A1As proof of this entrance level we accept: the A1 result of an LTC English assessment or an LTC certificate of the previous level (not older than 2 years).

The goal of this course is to improve the level of both your written and oral skills up to level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. You will practise a variety of work-related writing activities like: telephoning, giving a report on meetings, conducting small talk, asking questions, presenting visual information, improving general grammar and vocabulary, welcoming visitors in formal and informal situations and writing emails. 

  • To be admitted to this course both your current level of oral and written skills need to be at A2. As proof of this entrance level we accept: the A2 result of an LTC English assessment or an LTC certificate of the previous level (not older than 2 years).

The goal of this course is to improve your level of oral skills up to level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. You will build the necessary skills and practice a variety of speaking activities, tailored to your specific role and work context. To do so, you will receive guidance on the most relevant points of grammar, as well as expanding your vocabulary to deal with typical work tasks. Activities could include: greetings and introductions; conducting small talk; giving (short) presentations; providing progress updates; holding meetings; giving instructions; and intercultural communication. The precise content will be adapted so as to meet individual participants’ needs.

Speaking skills

The goal of this course is to improve the level of written skills up to level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. You will practise a variety of work-related writing activities like: giving opinions in writing, using linking words, improving cohesion in writing, making good paragraphs, editing your English in general and enhancing grammatical structures. 

  • To be admitted to this course your current level of written skills need to be at B1. As proof of this entrance level we accept the B1 result of an LTC English assessment or an LTC certificate of the previous level (not older than 2 years).
  • This course will not be offered in  2025. Please contact us at ltc@eur.nl in case you have any questions.

The goal of this course is to improve your level of oral skills up to level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. You will develop skills to improve your confidence in speaking in a variety of work-related areas with  native and non-native speakers of English. This often requires you to simplify or elaborate on information given, which requires flexibility in being able to use simple and more complex vocabulary. Activities could include: explaining processes; clarifying doubts; leading and taking part in meetings; discussing options, putting forward proposals; dealing with objections, and more general conversation and discussion. The course will be based on the individual participants’ needs.

  • To be admitted to this course your current level of oral skills need to be at B2. As proof of this entrance level we accept: the B2 result of an LTC English assessment or an LTC certificate of the previous level (not older than 2 years).

The goal of this course is to improve the level of written skills up to level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. You will practise a variety of work-related writing activities like: structuring your writing, giving facts and opinions, writing several letters and invitations, giving good and bad news, writing questionnaires, information sheets, and proposals and reporting results. 

  • To be admitted to this course your current level of written skills need to be at B2. As proof of this entrance level we accept: the B2 result of an LTC English assessment or an LTC certificate of the previous level (not older than 2 years).

Are you a Dutch or international EUR lecturer who teaches in English? Would you like to improve your language skills or boost your confidence in English?

The goal of this course is to improve the level of oral skills up to level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. C1 is the level needed to obtain for the
University Teaching Qualification. You will practise a variety of speaking activities that will improve your lecture skills, like: using appropriate language use in various situations,
presenting facts and figures, enhancing discussion techniques, using visuals and identifying techniques (interrupting, (dis)agreeing, summarising). 

  • To be admitted to this course, you have to be a university lecturer at EUR. Furthermore, your current level of oral skills needs to be at B2As proof of this entrance level we acceptthe B2 result of an LTC’s English assessment or an LTC certificate of the previous level (not older than 2 years).

  • For the A2 &B1 courses you will receive an offer since the courses are tailor-made.
  • The course fee for the B2 & C1 courses are € 500,-
  • The exam (optional) the exam at the end is € 65,-. The exam is needed to get a certificate.
  • If there are less than 5 registrations for a course, LTC will contact you regarding possibilities for a tailor-made program.

  • These courses are only accessible for staff of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus MC and Erasmus University College.
  • To be admitted to a staff course, you have to be in the possession of a language assessment statement or a certificate of a previous level. This certificate can not be older than two years.
  • The English courses are in principle offered three times a year (October-December / January-March / April-June)
  • The course materials are included in the course fee. You will receive a confirmation letter with further details when the course starts.
  • Course participants are expected to spend approximately two hours a week on course preparation and self-study. This is a guideline: some may need more time.
  • Our groups are small: the minimum number of participants is 5, the maximum is 10. Please note that the LTC reserves the right to cancel this course if the required minimum number of participants hasn’t been reached.
  • Attendance is not compulsory, but advisable.
  • Participants who successfully pass the optional exam at the end of the course will be awarded a certificate.
