Science that connects worlds
New knowledge and solutions emerge in society. For example, health scientists, economists and medical professionals are working together to reduce health disparities and improve access to high-quality care. Lawyers and criminologists join forces with sociologists to investigate criminal behavior. And psychologists, anthropologists and communication scientists investigate together with Rotterdam residents how they experience their environment and what can be improved.

Impact in research: social obstetrics
In addition to maternity care, young pregnant women in Rotterdam-South living in poverty need guidance in many other areas of their lives. For example, in solving debts and relationship problems. Social midwifery can provide that care. For example, in the municipal program Mothers of Rotterdam.
'My mentor didn't give up, and that was my salvation', one of the mothers states. Social obstetrics is an intense collaboration between obstetrics and gynecology of Erasmus MC and the municipality of Rotterdam, with a major impact in society. Rotterdam initiatives have grown into national programs in almost all Dutch municipalities. Practice and science come together here: the project has lead to dozens of PhD studies.
More examples of research with impact:
- Erasmus Professors are appointed for their role as leading figures on current societal issues and for the impact their research creates
- Researcher Kayla Green developed an approach together with young people to better measure youth wellbeing
- Many streets in Rotterdam are being limited to a maximum of 30 km/h for safety. Will road users comply? Scientist Inge Merkelbach investigated this with her team on behalf of the Municipality of Rotterdam
- Health sciences and medical students engage in societal projects within the community
