The Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet, the humanities library on Campus Woudestein, holds an impressive film collection. To mark the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), a selection from this collection is currently on display in the showcases at the University Library. Rotterdam-based filmmakers and IFFR have also kindly loaned materials for the exhibition. Curious to see a Golden Calf award up close? Then be sure to visit our expo!
A search through the library’s depository revealed many treasures: material on directors and actresses, film-related theses, bibliophile items, as well as film studies, novels and plays, and short stories that formed the basis for major box-office hits. Together with the Rotterdam-related materials generously provided by the filmmakers, the showcase exhibition presents a vivid picture of Rotterdam as a dynamic film city.
With special thanks to Michiel van de Goor and Lilith Liu of IFFR for the festival materials; to Rotterdam filmmaker Esmée van Loon, who supplied us with beautiful stills from her significant body of work; to Jasper Joosten of the world-famous 48 Hour Film Project; and to Gerard Meuldijk, co-writer of the quintessentially Rotterdam film De Marathon, who was willing to bring a truly special object out of storage to shine in the University Library display cases. Come and see it for yourself—on view through April 2026.
