For this new University Library exhibition, a selection has been made from the collection of the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet, the humanities library of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The exhibition brings together (re)tellings of myths and legends from all corners of the world.
Old Tales, New Tellings offers an overview of retellings from every continent: Oceania, Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America. These stories reveal how myths and legends are continuously reinterpreted, adapted, and passed on, and how new perspectives play an important role in this process.
The exhibition includes, among other things, collections of stories from the early twentieth century, feminist retellings, and a special display case dedicated to Dutch legends. In addition, you can listen to or read a number of new acquisitions via the Libby app. These titles can be easily recognized by the Libby icon in the display cases.
Take a fascinating journey through the rich diversity of stories and discover how the same myths and legends take on new forms in different times and cultures. Do you have any tips or suggestions of your own? Let us know via the QR code available at the exhibition.
Come by and be inspired by the timeless power of stories! The exhibition can be viewed through September 2026.
