What does this study entail?
In the master specialisation Governance of Migration and Diversity - part of the Master Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam - you will learn to understand and manage complex societal developments, with a special focus on the contemporary issues of migration and diversity.
This track is part of the interdisciplinary GMD Master programme, linking the University of Leiden, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam (including the Institute for Social Sciences in The Hague).
Is this the right programme for you?
Migration and diversity are central to major societal transformations, from global inequality and labour markets to political polarization and international relations. These issues affect not only migrants, but society as a whole.
This master specialisation examines migration and diversity as part of wider societal changes driven by globalisation, inequality and political contestation. You analyse how migration is governed at local, national and international levels, and how policies, law and public debates shape who is able to move, settle and belong.
Particular attention is paid to discrimination, cumulative disadvantage and intersectionality, as well as to the role of media, politics and public opinion in shaping migration debates and outcomes.

Joint programme
The master specialisation Governance of Migration and Diversity brings together different disciplines: history, sociology, politics, international development and urban design as a foundation for a better understanding of the governance of migration and diversity.
The programme is a collaboration between Erasmus University Rotterdam (including the Institute for Social Studies in The Hague), Leiden University and Delft University of Technology. The cooperation between these universities provides a unique combination of varied expertise within one single master programme. Students can apply to one of the four tracks:
- History (Leiden University);
- Public Administration (Erasmus University Rotterdam)
- Sociology (Erasmus University Rotterdam);
- Law (Leiden University)
- International Relations & Development (ISS, The Hague).
The Sociology track focuses on sociological theories and empirical research on migration, diversity and inequality in a globalized and increasingly contested world. You study:
- the drivers and patterns of migration;
- processes of immigrant incorporation and exclusion;
- discrimination, intersectionality and cumulative disadvantage;
- migration attitudes, politicization and public discourse;
- and the governance of migration, including migration control and policy responses.
Rather than taking migration categories and policies for granted, you learn to critically analyse how they are constructed—and with what consequences for inequality, governance and social cohesion.
Note that participating in the master will involve travel costs between the cities (Leiden, Delft, The Hague, Rotterdam).
