HBO students or students who do not have a previous education equal to an academic bachelor, can apply for the one-year pre-master Media Studies.
The master Media Studies offers a one-year pre-master for promising candidates who do not have a previous education equal to an academic bachelor. This preparatory programme caters in particular for students who have limited experience with media and communication theory and social-scientific research methods.
The pre-master is suitable for graduates of HBO (Dutch Higher Vocational Education) programmes or equivalent international programmes that deal with similar topics as the Media & Creative Industries, but with relatively limited academic depth.
Bridging the knowledge gap
During the pre-master programme, you will enrol in selected courses at the undergraduate level. You will become acquainted with key concepts and approaches in media and communication studies and the social sciences. After a successful completion of the pre-master, you will have all the knowledge you will need to meet the requirements of the master Media Studies specialisation Media & Creative Industries. Students who successfully finish the pre-master will have direct access to the master specialisation.
Developing analytical and research skills
You will receive advanced academic training in the pre-master. You will improve analytical skills to critically analyse current developments in the field of media and communication. In addition, you will practice writing essays and conducting social scientific research. At the end of the pre-master year, you can put your newly gained research skills and knowledge to good use when you write your final paper, a Premaster Research Project.
The pre-master Media Studies in Rotterdam
The pre-master for the master Media Studies in Rotterdam is a highly intensive one-year course preparing you for the master specialisation Media & Creative Industries. You will learn about statistics and acquire academic skills, write a large number of essays and, to top it all off, conduct independent research. Clearly, we expect a lot of you. But your efforts will be rewarded when you can start the master specialisation in the following year.
