Biography
Phuong Hoan Le is an Assistant Professor in the Organization & Management team at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She holds a BA in History (Media & Culture track, with honours), MA in Media Studies (Media & Business track, cum laude), MSc in Business Administration with the EUR Excellence Scholarship, and PhD in Media and Communication.
Her PhD project, supervised by dr. Vidhi Chaudhri, dr. Yijing Wang, and prof. dr. Susanne Janssen, focuses on the lived experiences of gig workers, such as freelancers, independent contractors, Airbnb hosts, Amazon Mechanical Turkers, Uber drivers, Deliveroo food deliverers, who make up an increasingly significant part of the (global) economy. More specifically, she investigated how and where gig workers experience identification, and in what ways contextual factors shape these experiences.
In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities at Erasmus University, Hoàn has been actively involved in academic communities. She coordinates the Platform Labor Group, was selected as 2025-2026 Fellow at the Reshaping Work institute, and co-founded one of the largest research clusters at her previous faculty, Responsible Organizations: Communication, Change and Society (ROCCS). Additionally, she represented PhDs as a member of the PhD Council of the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities, coordinated the ESHCC PhD Club blog, and helped bridge the gap between scientists and the broader public through the university's Wetenschapscafé.
