About the presentation
What does it mean to say that Max Weber was “a sociologist” or a founding father of public administration? These are ways that he is routinely described today, but for most of his life (1864-1920) he described himself as an economist. This was also his academic position: he was Professor of Political Economy and Financial Science at Freiburg from 1894 to 1897, and then at Heidelberg until he resigned in 1903. He was a vigorous critic of nascent German sociology, but in the last year of his life he drafted an outline of what he called “my sociology”. Keith Tribe’s presentation will consider what this “sociology” was, and argue that a clearer view of this issue provides fresh insight into the importance of Max Weber for the social sciences today.
About Keith Tribe
Dr. Keith Tribe worked as a sociologist, economist and historian at the Universities of Cambridge and Keele, held numerous international fellowships, and is now an independent scholar and translator. He published numerous articles and books on the history of the social sciences and recently a new translation of Max Weber’s Economy and Society (Harvard UP, 2019).
