Lecture

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the guest lecture given by Roy Partain, professor of Commercial Law and Sustainability at the University of Aberdeen.

While many environmentalists are aware of the challenges presented from coal, crude oil, and natural gas, most remain unaware of the fourth hydrocarbon, methane hydrates. That recently discovered resource has the potential to strategically redraw energy and environmental debates in new, unexpected directions. This presentation will introduce the unusual resource of methane hydrates, examining its natural place in ecology. Then, the presentation will examine the locations of this until recently unknown natural resource and the implications that might have on energy geopolitics, as both energy resource and water resource. Next, the discussion extends into a variety of environmental concerns and human right concerns that could be impacted by the development of methane hydrates. The presentation also discusses the need for greater transboundary governance of such resources. It is hoped that this presentation will enable more conversations to begin on how communities could respond to these issues.

Participation in the conference is free of charge, but registration is required through the webform below or by sending an email to rile-sec@law.eur.nl.
