In this lecture “Possible Options of a Multilateral Investment Court”, Prof. Xiao will explain China’s attitude towards the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) in general, on the basis of China’s own experience in the ISDS.

In this lecture “Possible Options of a Multilateral Investment Court”, Prof. Xiao will explain China’s attitude towards the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) in general, on the basis of China’s own experience in the ISDS. Then, He will analyze two fundamental features of the Investment Court System (ICS) proposed by the EU, i.e. the standing tribunal and appellate mechanism. Furthermore, he will explain how they address some of the concerns about the ISDS, will discuss some unresolved issues and present his own opinions about the deficiencies that ICS has.

Dr Jun Xiao is Associate Professor at the Wuhan University Institute of International Law. He was educated at the Wuhan University and the University of Saarland, Germany (2000-2006). After he graduated from the LLM program “European Integration” at the Europainstitut, University of Saarland, he has won a scholarship from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and undertaken the doctoral studies at the University of Saarland. His research activities mainly related to international investment law and international trade law. He has published in German “Das Prinzip der Nichtdiskriminierung in einem kuenftigen multilateralen Investitionsabkommen” (by Nomos-Verlag) and a number of articles in English, German and Chinese.
