dr. I (Ioannis) Kampourakis

Biography

Ioannis Kampourakis is Associate Professor of Law and Markets at Erasmus School of Law, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research examines the legal foundations of the economy, drawing on legal theory, political economy, and transnational law.

His current research focuses on the transformations of European economic governance, particularly the resurgence of industrial policy, the turn to economic statecraft, and the changing relationship between public power and markets. In 2026, he was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant for STRATEGIC LAW, a five-year project examining the legal architecture of economic statecraft in the European Union. He also coordinates LPE-GREEN, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network investigating the law and political economy of the European green transition. Previously, in 2023, he was awarded a three-year NWO Veni grant to examine the EU regulation of critical raw materials and the shift towards industrial policy and market instrumentalism under the European Green Deal.

Ioannis is a co-director of the project 'Law and Political Economy in Europe'. He serves as an editor of the Law and Political Economy book series published by Cambridge University Press, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Law and Political Economy. His research has appeared in journals such as Modern Law Review, Regulation & Governance, Leiden Journal of International Law, European Law Open, and Yale Journal of International Law.

Before joining Erasmus, Ioannis held postdoctoral fellowships at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Oxford and the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Tel Aviv University. He has also held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Glasgow, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, and the University of Johannesburg.

Ioannis holds a PhD in Law from the Free University of Berlin, a Master’s in Public Law from Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, and an LLB from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
