Mathematics Deficiency Exam

  • At the moment we are busy planning the CD and Mathematics deficiency tests. Because of the Corona virus this unfortunately takes more time. It is expected that the deficiency tests will take place in March and April. We aim to publish the final schedule by the end of December.
We kindly ask you to be patient for a while. We apologize for the inconvenience.

  • Prospective students of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) can be required to supply proof of their mathematical knowledge level. If you are unable to supply this proof by means of diplomas or certificates, you can participate in EUR's Mathematics Deficiency Exam (MDE) to demonstrate that you do possess the required level of knowledge. The test can be completed in levels 1 (C), 2 (A), or 3 (B).

    • As long as you do not supply proof of your knowledge level in Mathematics while applying for a study programme at EUR, you are deemed "Mathematics deficient". Your application will be dismissed because of this. To find out which mathematics level is required for each of our study programmes, refer to our 'Admission' webpage that contains links to said admission requirements.
Passing the Mathematics Deficiency Exam (MDE) allows you to demonstrate you do possess the required Mathematical knowledge level for a study programme. You can also participate in a state examination via DUO (state examination webpage in Dutch).

Keep in mind that some study programmes must adhere to admissions quota due to high demand. An example of this is our bachelor programme International Business Administration. If you want to apply for this type of study programme, you're required to register for this programme with the Dutch national student registration system Studielink months earlier than for other study programmes. Refer to this webpage of the organisation behind Studielink and this Dutch governmental webpage for more information.

  • You can enrol for the Mathematics Deficiency Examination according to the procedure set out below.

    • Registration (does not apply to Erasmus MC)

Please note: You are required to contact Erasmus MC’s Dienstencentrum Onderwijs if you want to sit for an entrance examination for a degree programme offered by this faculty (Medicine).

You can enrol in other EUR study programmes according to the procedure set out below.

      1. Once the registration period for the Mathematics Deficiency Exam has started – and provided you already have an ERNA account – you can continue your registration procedure by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.
      2.  After you've completed your payment and registered for the Mathematics Deficiency Exam you will receive a registration confirmation via e-mail (student email address) This e-mail also serves as your proof of registration. Please first check your e-mail account's spam folder if you cannot find the confirmation.

The participation fee for the Mathematics Deficiency Exam is 100. You are not entitled to a refund should you decide not to take the tests before the start of the Mathematics Deficiency Exam.

    • Participants with extra facilities get half an hour extra time.

    • You will be notified of the results by e-mail within four weeks after taking the exam. The examinations are prepared and checked by external lecturers. It is not possible to correspond with these lecturers. Your work and calculations will remain available for inspection for a maximum of four weeks after you have received the result.

    • To pass the Mathematics Deficiency Exam (MDE) for all study programmes you must achieve a result of 5,5 or higher, except when applying for study programmes at the faculty Erasmus School of Economics (ESE). For study programmes at ESE, a 7,5 or higher is required to pass the MDE. Your results remain valid for two years.

    • You are entitled to sit the Mathematics Deficiency Exam (MDE) you apply for twice per calendar year; once during the first round and once during the second round. If you achieve unsatisfactory results for the Mathematics tests during the first round, you'll be registered for the second rounds of the same tests automatically. If you fail the resit as well, you'll have to reapply for (and repay) the MDE in the subsequent year.

    • When you pass the Mathematics Deficiency Exam (MDE) for a study programme of your choice, you are not registered for this study programme automatically. However, after passing the MDE you should register for the study programme(s) of your choice as soon as possible. Make sure to communicate the fact you passed the programme's MDE in your registration to prevent any confusion on the matter.

Keep in mind that some study programmes must adhere to admissions quota due to high demand. An example of this is our bachelor programme International Business Administration. If you want to apply for this type of study programme, you're required to register for this programme with the Dutch national student registration system Studielink months earlier than for other study programmes. Remedial teaching in Mathematics

If you wish to receive extra help in your preparations for the MDE at EUR, you can apply for the 'Study boost Deficiencies in Mathematics' at our Language and Training Centre. During this Study boost one of our teachers will assist you in your preparations during a number of classes.
Apart of the above-stated classes, you'll also gain access to an online self study course containing many exercises. With this program you can also train yourself, if you so desire.

The sessions take place at the campus of Erasmus University Rotterdam, 4 to 6 weeks before the start of the entrance examination. Thus, keep in mind that the registrations for the Study boost end more early than the registrations of the actual entrance examinations.

  • Students with a temporary or structural functional limitation may make use of certain facilities (within reasonable limits) for the duration of their functional limitation. These facilities include modified examination facilities and are intended to ensure an equal chance of study success for all students. Participants who wish to make use of these special facilities must successfully apply for this privilege first.

    • Students who wish to make use of said special facilities should submit a written request in which they present the nature of their situation to the examining board of their relevant faculty. If you are enrolled at two different faculties, you should submit a separate request to the examination board of each faculty. Refer to the table below to find the contact information of the various examination boards at EUR.

The examination board will decide whether you are eligible on the basis of your impairment to sit written examinations in the above rooms, and the period of time to be covered by this consent. Once you have received permission and are allowed to make use of the special facilities, apply for these in the next subsection.

    • The documents in which your examination board gives her consent to make use of special facilities for students with a temporary or structural functional limitation can be sent to es.ask.deficiencytest@eur.nl by e-mail. The documents must be received within a minimum of seven days before the actual test. Afterwards your examination administration will make sure that you are able to make use of special facilities while doing your Entrance Examination.
