The renowned French sociologist Fabien Truong will give a lecture on the troubled French banlieues and the methods employed to resolve these issues. What can Rotterdam learn from this approach?

The evening is organized by Knowledge Lab Leefbare Wijken. The purpose of the lecture and discussion is to get to know the problems of, and approach in, French disadvantaged neighborhoods: what should we do or strive for in the Netherlands

Professor Truong has been studying French banlieues through ethnographic research for several years. In his lecture, Truong goes into the problems faced by young people in these neighbourhoods, but also what the French authorities do (or attempt to do) to improve the social situation and offer young people more opportunities in French society.

In his book Des capuches et des hommes he writes about life in the banlieues in general, residents’ relationships with their fathers, females, their education, the constant temptation of crime, their hopes and dreams, and their relationship with religion. He also provides a critical view of the divide between the banlieues and Paris’ wealthier inner city.
His new book, Radicalized Loyalties (2018), outlines the experience of living in the banlieues and how being excluded from mainstream French society can lead to radicalization.
