Profile

Dr. J.P. (Julien) Kloeg is Lecturer in Political Philosophy at Erasmus University College.

At EUC, Julien teaches practical philosophy, ranging from early modern political philosophy to contemporary European politics.

Julien received his doctorate in philosophy in early 2019. His dissertation is concerned with the relation between politics and ethics, seen from the perspective of depoliticization as a theoretical and practical problem. In his dissertation the European Union, with its mode of 'policy without politics' (Vivien A. Schmidt) serves as a critical starting point. Having introduced seven direct and indirect relations between politics and ethics and analyzing their (de)politicizing effects, politicization across the board is finally secured through a combination of both direct and indirect relations. The specific configuration envisioned is one of political engagement coupled with an affirmation of the possibility of antagonism. This is applied to the European Union through the introduction of the notion of Europopulism.

Current research interests include: critical pedagogies and the philosophy of education, cynicism as a challenge to philosophical critique, and new conceptions of citizenship.
