Koen de Reus was born in Emmen, the Netherlands, moved to Rotterdam and spent the majority of his childhood in France and Canada. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he completed the Liberal Arts & Sciences programme at the University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. He was awarded a BA with majors in Biology, Cognitive Science and Psychology, and a minor in Methods and Statistics. During the final year of this degree, Koen went on exchange to Perth at the University of Western Australia where he enrolled in several conservation courses allowing him to work closely with local nature organisations.

Passionate about conservation, Koen completed an MSc in Wild Animal Biology at the Royal Veterinary College London in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London. This allowed him to work at the London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo where he gained practical skills in animal care, animal management and animal health. For his MSc thesis, Koen completed an internship at the Sealcentre Pieterburen in the Netherlands researching vocal development in harbour seal pups.

Koen started at EUC in August 2018 as a tutor for the Life Sciences Department and continues his bioacoustic research in harbour and grey seals. Next to his teaching position and his research, Koen enjoys travelling and tennis.
