Duurzaamheid is een belangrijk thema voor de EUR. De afgelopen jaren zijn grote stappen gezet, meer en minder zichtbaar. De vraag die nu voor ons ligt, is hoe we de komende jaren verder gaan. Wat zijn onze nieuwe duurzaamheidsdoelen in onderzoek, onderwijs en bedrijfsvoering? Over deze en andere vragen hebben studenten, medewerkers en academici zich gebogen tijdens de conferentie ‘Duurzaamheid – the next level’, die op 31 mei plaatsvond. Deze conferentie werd georganiseerd door het CvB in samenwerking met studenten uit de Universiteitsraad om input te generen voor de ambitie van de universiteit voor de komende jaren met betrekking tot duurzaamheid in onderzoek, onderwijs en bedrijfsvoering.

"Attaining sustainability in the Anthropocene, the era in which humans influence the Earth system, requires us to rethink how we relate to the human-nature interface and how we understand the traditional divide between disciplines, into social and natural sciences. This requires considerable research investment in all disciplines. Yet, more is required. Importantly, we need to engage creative young brains and help them prepare for addressing the implications of the Anthropocene for human behavior. Sustainability and the challenges it presents should thus be part of all curricula, including those at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The advent of the Anthropocene challenges me to get my head around its implications for international policy and law.”

Op de dag van de conferentie presenteerden studenten een standbeeld van plastic. Het materiaal daarvoor hadden ze al verzameld na slechts twee uur struinen over de campus. Ook presenteerden studenten een video waarin ze uitleggen hoe het onderwijs aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam kan bijdragen aan een duurzamere toekomst.
