Stargate: accelerating greener Aviation

With a greener future and a more environment friendly future in mind, aviation company Stargate cannot be looked over. Stargate is an ambitious project selected by the European Commission to prove that a more sustainable aviation really is possible. Together with a diverse consortium of 21 partners, Brussels Airport takes the lead in the development of innovative solutions to create the green airports and aviation of the future. They have certainly not been sitting still which makes for a good opportunity to showcase what they have been working on!

New electric highloaders

Stargates community partner DHL is strongly committed to the decarbonisation of airport activities, an objective that is taking shape already in the programme’s first year: on top of the two electric ground handling vehicles, DHL is currently testing two electric high loaders.

Fuel hydrant dispensers

Another partner of Stargate; Skytanking is performing a large-scale test with two fully electric fuel hydrant dispenser vehicles to refuel aircraft at Brussels Airport, with the aim of gaining useful insights into charging solutions and battery performance. In the coming years, Skytanking plans to develop, test and use its own 100% electric factory-built hydrant dispensers.

Extending the Digital Green Lane

The Digital Green Lane is a uniform standardized pick-up and delivery process between freight forwarders and ground handling agents at BRUcargo, with the aim to operate 100% digitally. This offers various benefits:

  • Less waiting time for trucks
  • Less congestion
  • More efficiency
  • Less paperwork.

Stargate analyses in what ways such a digital hand-over process can be implemented at our fellow airports Budapest and Athens.

Clearly, Stargate shows there are numerous things do be done in order to make sustainable aviation part of our future, and will without a doubt continue to do so.
