Alex Voorhoeve appointed as Visiting Professor at Erasmus School of Economics

Alex Voorhoeve aangesteld als gasthoogleraar bij Erasmus

As of 1 September 2017 and for the period of one year Alex Voorhoeve is joining Erasmus School of Economics from London, where he is Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Professor Jack Vromen, Academic Director of EIPE (Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics), is thrilled: “Erasmus School of Economics is working hard to further develop its Economics & Humanities programme. The advent of Alex Voorhoeve helps us in making a more sustained effort to connect with ethics and political philosophy – while maintaining the School’s strong tradition in economics.”

Research and teaching

Most of Voorhoeve’s research is in the areas Egalitarianism, Decision Theory and Moral Decision-Making and Fair Allocation of Resources in Health Care. He works on several questions that are central to egalitarian theory, including whether it matters that some are worse off than others, the relationship between ‘social egalitarian’ and ‘brute luck egalitarian’ views, and the role of people's opportunities to choose in justifying unequal outcomes. Furthermore he is interested in what psychology reveals to us about how we actually make decisions and what rational choice theory and moral reflection tell us about how we should make decisions. Much of his applied work is on how to use limited resources to meet people's health needs. Alex Voorhoeve will be teaching a course in the Research Master in Philosophy and Economics.

Visiting Professor in Ethics and Economics Alex Voorhoeve holds a M.Sc. in Economics (1997) and an M.A. in Philosophy (1999) from Erasmus University Rotterdam. After finishing his economics degree, he worked at the Netherlands' Ministry of Finance, before giving in to the temptation to do a graduate study in philosophy. He completed an M.Phil. in Philosophy at Cambridge (2000) and a Ph.D. in Philosophy at University College London (2006). He joined LSE in 2004 and has worked there ever since. Voorhoeve has held visiting positions at Harvard (2008-09), Princeton (2012-13) and the National Institutes of Health, U.S. (2016-17).
