Alumnus Jan Fels donates his book to the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet

On 27 November 2018 Jan Fels paid a visit to campus Woudestein to donate his book to the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet. His book,
“Je neemt jezelf mee overzee”, describes his personal vision on the postwar emigration of Dutch immigrants to Australia.

Part one of his book is about his personal experience with emigration, a life changing event that he did not only experience once, but twice: once with his mother, and once with his wife. The second part of the book is about his research on the emigration process and how it was coordinated and driven by the Dutch and Australian government over time, for which he interviewed seventy Dutch Australian migrants and studied over 50 000 emigration cards. Even though Jan and his wife decided to move back to the Netherlands, Australia has always remained a part of him.
