The NWO (Dutch Research Council), in the Call for the Open Competition - Domain Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) - has awarded an XS grant to econometrician Annika Camehl of Erasmus School of Economics. She will receive a grant of up to 50,000 euro.
In 2022, the NWO launched the Open Competition SSH Call. This Call is allocated in three different types of grants, of which the XS grant is specifically intended to encourage curiosity-driven and bold research that involves the relatively rapid exploration of a promising idea (12 months maximum). The research projects must be ground-breaking and are high risk-high gain. Most important is that the result of each project contributes to the advancement of science.
About Annika Camehl
Annika Camehl is an associate professor at the Econometric Institute of Erasmus School of Economics and a research fellow at Tinbergen Institute. She obtained her PhD in 2018 from the Freie Universität Berlin and DIW Berlin Graduate Center. Her main research field is applied econometrics, where she focuses on multivariate time series analysis, especially on estimation, model selection and structural identification and the application to macroeconomic questions.
Understanding Rare Shocks: A Micro-Driven Approach to Macroeconomic Analysis
Annika Camehl’s XS project tackles a pressing challenge: how to understand the macroeconomic impact of rare but severe events, like floods or trade shocks, when national (macro-level) data is too limited. It introduces a new econometric method that bridges detailed local (micro-level) data with macro-level outcomes. By combining insights from households, firms, or regions with broader economic models, the method addresses key gaps in estimating the broader economic effects of rare events. This innovative approach offers a broadly-applicable tool for studying disruptions in economies affected by climate change, geopolitical tensions, or abrupt policy shifts and guiding policy responses to mitigate the effects.
