Applying for jobs anonymously does not work

Applying anonymously to combat discrimination in the labor market has already come to an end. Five large municipalities stopped because they saw no noticeable effect. Robert Dur, Professor of Economics of Incentives and Performance at Erasmus School of Economics, shares his opinion concerning this matter with an interview for NPO Radio 1, 15 June 2018.

This week, the municipality of Zwolle decided to no longer make the name and birthplace unreadable in application letters. Earlier, the municipalities of Utrecht, Groningen, Amersfoort and Nijmegen stopped the experiment after one or almost two years. According to Robert Dut it is difficult to say whether or not there has been an effect. The tests are of a very small-scale and so because of that it is difficult to draw conclusions. He states that a larger-scale research would be necessary to determine whether anonymous applications could have an influence on labor discrimination.
