Erasmus School of Economics

Online Supermarket Picnic, established in 2015 by - inter alia - an alumnus of Erasmus School of Economics, is the number 1 in the Top 250 Scale-Ups 2019. The list was presented yesterday by the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship (ECE), Rotterdam School of Management – Erasmus University (RSM) and Nlgroeit. Between 2015 and 2018, Picnic grew the fastest and created 1697 new jobs.

The founder of Takeaway.com, last year’s winner, and academic director of Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship Professor Dr. Justin Jansen handed out the Golden Grower (‘’Gouden Groeier’’) to Erasmus School of Economics alumnus and co-founder of Picnic, Michiel Muller, during the yearly event of Nlgroeit Business Boost Live in Ahoy Rotterdam.

About the Top 250

The Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship monitors fast-growing companies in the Netherlands. Every year, they present the results of this in the Scale-up Dashboard. The Top 250 Scale-ups is based on the Scale-up Dashboard and is published in collaboration with Nlgroeit. The research is led by Prof. Dr. Justin Jansen, Academic Director of Erasmus Center for Entrepreneurship and Professor of Corporate Entrepreneurship at RSM. The Top 250 Scale-ups distinguishes itself from other lists because its measures growth by the increase in the number of employees alongside of the growth of the company's turnover, whereas other lists often solely focus on the growth of turnover

Criteria

To be considered in the Top 250, a company must be a fast-growing company (scale-up) which;

  • has at least 10 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) and / or at least 5 million euros in turnover at the start of the measurement period
  • achieved an average growth of at least 20% in FTE and / or revenue in three consecutive years in the 2015-2018 period.

The Top 250 Scale-ups consists of the 250 Dutch companies which achieved the highest level of growth in turnover and/or FTE between 2015 and 2018. The Top 10 consists of the companies that created the most jobs during this period and showed the highest average annual growth in turnover.

Top three

This year, Picnic created the most jobs and showed the highest average annual growth in turnover. Having created 1697 jobs since 2015 and having achieved an average growth of 162%, Picnic thus has deservedly obtained the first place. The second place is taken by last year’s winner, Takeaway.com, which created 2272 jobs and had an average growth of 88%. The third place is taken by Rituals, which created 2880 new jobs and had an average growth of 38%.
