Economists predict: Brazil wins World Cup, Germany or Spain second

Erasmus School of Economics

With the beginning of the World Cup, the last World Cup pools will be filled in quickly. But who should you put on number one? Jan van Ours, Professor of Applied Economics at Erasmus School of Economics, and Martin van Tuijl, Professor at University Tilburg, are certain of their choice. They discussed their finding in an interview for RTL Nieuws, 13 June 2018.

According to them Brazil will be the new world champion. Germany or Spain will become second. How did they reach this conclusion? ‘We looked at odds with the bookmakers, the home advantage and the curse of the defending champion.’
