With her master thesis called ‘Optimizing Europe-Asia container routing with transshipment’ Emma De Koning has won the SmartPort thesis prize.
SmartPort stimulates and finances scientific research for businesses in the Rotterdam harbour. Erasmus University Rotterdam has been a partner of this institute for years.
In her thesis she analyses the improvement of container transport by adjusting the number of hubs in the network. This way she creates an approach which suggests that network optimization would lead to a significant efficiency in the number of ships, costs and CO2 reduction. De Koning was guided by professors Rommert Dekker and Rob Zuidwijk in writing her thesis.
