Erasmus School of Economics celebrates global talent and research impact in 2025 edition of Backbone Magazine

Erasmus School of Economics proudly announces the publication of the 2025 edition of Backbone Magazine, a signature publication that captures the intellectual spirit and international character of its academic community. This year’s issue offers a rich blend of research, alumni achievements, student stories, and a celebration of life in Rotterdam.

A message from the mayor

Carola Schouten, Mayor of Rotterdam, offers a warm and personal reflection on what it means to study and live in Rotterdam, particularly for international students. She begins by sharing her own connection to Erasmus University Rotterdam as an alumna, though not of the School of Economics. She recalls the experience of moving to a new city and being embraced by its diverse, welcoming spirit. As a historical port city, Rotterdam has long been a hub for global exchange, welcoming sailors, merchants, and students from all over the world. This openness, she explains, has shaped the city’s identity and continues to benefit both the city and its institutions.

Research that makes a difference

The magazine delves into pressing global issues through the lens of academic research. Topics such as behavioural nudging in urban mobility, gender bias in online reviews, and the implications of private equity in the childcare sector are approached not just as theoretical discussions but as real-world problems requiring data-driven solutions. These studies underscore the School’s commitment to research that informs policy and improves lives.

A campus that reflects the world

The international orientation of Erasmus School of Economics is evident throughout the magazine. Faculty members reflect on how diverse classrooms enhance learning outcomes, broaden perspectives, and prepare students for careers in a globalised world. There is a strong focus on community and student well-being, with initiatives like The Living Room, the ROOM app, and student-led support programmes aimed at fostering mental health and inclusion.

Alumni who lead by example

The 2025 edition highlights stories of alumni who are using their education to drive societal progress. Frank Rijken shares how he balanced Olympic-level gymnastics with academic excellence, while Gawithrie Vaanholt reflects on her journey from refugee to executive, now leading the Dutch launch of the Karma Points philanthropy platform. These stories represent the School’s values of resilience, responsibility, and forward thinking.

Rotterdam as a living lab

Backbone also shines a spotlight on Rotterdam as both a vibrant student city and a source of academic inspiration. From architectural evolution to local bar culture, the city is portrayed as a dynamic backdrop to student life and intellectual discovery. The School’s relationship with Rotterdam goes beyond location, it is embedded in its identity and outlook.
