In the coming years Erasmus School of Economics is investing 5 million euros in five research programmes that explicitly address one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Based on an open call by the Dean, researchers from Erasmus School of Economics have submitted programme proposals in recent weeks, in which a clear link is established with one or more SDGs. Features of the SDGs that are explicitly addressed in the five selected research programmes concern poverty, inequality, diversity, responsible labour and innovations.
Jan Peter Balkenende, Professor at Erasmus School of Economics and also chairman of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition, is pleased that his School embraces the SDGs in the form of research projects. 'The Netherlands has committed itself both to the SDGs and to the Paris climate agreement, which in the next 15 years will unmistakably form the guideline for the national sustainability policy. It would be great if the selected research projects contribute to the embedding of the SDGs in the curricula of our educational programmes for example via minors, majors and master's programs. '
The SDGs research projects, the first of which will start in the Spring of 2018, include data collection on various continents, field experiments in Africa, Asia and South America, innovation projects in India, gender and migration aspects in China and India and, for example, efficient transport of medication across various different African countries. The research is carried out with the help of PhD students and postdocs.
