What are the latest developments in tech investments? Nvidia, ETFs and Bitcoin are discussed by Mary Pieterse-Bloem, Professor of Financial Markets at Erasmus School of Economics, together with Jean-Paul van Oudheusden as part of BNR Nieuwsradio's investor panel on Tuesday, 18 November.
Are doubts about Nvidia justified?
One topic of discussion was Nvidia, a company specialising in the production of chipsets, data centres, and artificial intelligence. Many sceptics believe the company is surrounded by uncertainty. Pieterse-Bloem gives two reasons for this: Nvidia's market share in China has fallen from 95% to virtually zero, and there has been a surge in hyperscalers, companies that build huge numbers of data centres in no time at all.
Nevertheless, Pieterse-Bloem expresses confidence. Large companies are currently very dependent on Nvidia and would prefer to reduce this dependence, but as long as there are no more powerful replacements, they will continue to use Nvidia's chips and data centres.
Alternative investments
The guests also discussed Bitcoin. The price of Bitcoin has fallen 25% since its peak in October. According to Pieterse-Bloem, this decline is due to a poorer outlook for interest rate cuts in the US and declining sentiment about artificial intelligence.
In 2022, the number of new ETF investors rose by almost 200 percent, mainly among women and young people. This is good news, according to Pieterse-Bloem, who is pleased that investing is becoming more popular and ETFs are typically a product for novice investors, making them a good stepping stone.
