On Friday 30 June 2017 Job van Exel will publicly accept his appointment as Endowed Professor of Economics and Values at Erasmus School of Economics, on behalf of the Vereniging Trustfonds EUR. The title of his inaugural lecture is “Value(s)-based economics: On happiness, welfare and moral dilemmas”, but note that the lecture is in Dutch. Van Exel, who is also employed by the Institute of Health Policy & Management (iBMG), took up this part-time post at Erasmus School of Economics in March 2016.
Summary of inaugural lecture
With the aim of contributing to the subject of human choice behaviour and decision-making processes, Job van Exel focuses mainly on what individuals value and the role of values in organisations. In his lecture Van Exel highlights the new research programme which aims to generate more insight into individual motives and dealing with moral dilemmas by linking economics with the social dimension (behaviour, culture, citizenship and history) and the philosophical/theological dimension (ethics, values, standards and meaningfulness). One of the research tracks within this programme is aimed at identifying the most important shared personal well-being values in The Netherlands, as starting point for the development of a well-being measure for policy evaluation based on a broad definition of welfare.
About Job van Exel
Job van Exel obtained his MSc in Economics at Erasmus School of Economics in 1995 and went on to obtain a doctorate from VU University Amsterdam in 2011. From 1995 to 2000, Van Exel was a transport economist at the Netherlands Economic Institute (NEI, now ECORYS) and held the position of health economist at the Institute for Medical Technology Assessment (iMTA) from 2000 to 2006. He has been working at Erasmus University Rotterdam’s Institute of Health Policy & Management (iBMG) since 2006, recently as an associate professor of health economics with measuring and valuing outcomes in health care as main area of interest. Job is also fellow at Tinbergen Institute.
