Insurance company rewards for good behaviour
Kirsten Rohde, Professor of Behavioural Economics (with a focus on intertemporal choice) at Erasmus School of Economics, was a guest at BNR Nieuwsradio. She participated in a discussion on the fact that insurance company ASR is going to reward its customers who engage in physical activity more often.
The insurance company has set weekly goals when it comes to physical activity. Every time a customer reaches such a goal, he or she receives a gift card. Active customers will also receive a discount on their insurance premiums. Customers who want to participate, are required to share their medical information with the insurance company. According to Rohde, sharing this information will give customers an achievable goal in return. She believes the initiative can make a difference for those who want to exercise more. Although she is convinced that these incentives will have positive short-term effects, she is concerned about the (lack of) effects in the long run. Will people still engage in physical activity, when there is no reward anymore?
