Dr Job van Exel of the Institute of Health Policy and Management (iBMG) has been appointed Endowed Professor of Economics and Values at Erasmus School of Economics, on behalf of the Vereniging Trustfonds EUR. He has taken up this part-time role on 1 March 2016. His appointment is in keeping with the aim of increasing iBMG’s contribution to the subject of human choice behaviour and decision-making processes.
In his research, Job van Exel will focus mainly on what individuals value and the role of values in organisations. Together with faculty of Erasmus School of Economics, Van Exel will participate in a new research programme designed to study the development of a value system. Within the framework of this programme, the social dimension (behaviour, culture, citizenship and history) and the philosophical/theological dimension (ethics, values, standards and meaningfulness) will be explicitly linked to the economic paradigm. The research will therefore have an economic focus. Nevertheless, new insights of importance to the use and possible modification of current economic models will certainly be gained because of the inclusion of concepts developed and used in the social sciences and arts and humanities.
Job van Exel obtained his MSc in Economics at Erasmus School of Economics in 1995 and went on to obtain a doctorate from VU University Amsterdam in 2011. From 1995 to 2000, Van Exel was a transport economist at the Netherlands Economic Institute (NEI, now ECORYS) and held the position of health economist at the Institute for Medical Technology Assessment (iMTA) from 2000 to 2006. He has been working at Erasmus University Rotterdam’s iBMG since 2006, recently as an associate professor of health economics and director of the Master’s Degree Programme in Health Economics, Policy and Law.
