As of 1 January 2017, Dr Maarten Bosker has been appointed Endowed Professor in International Trade and Development at Erasmus School of Economics through the Erasmus Trustfonds.
In his research, Maarten Bosker focuses on the traditional questions concerning the role that international trade plays in influencing current welfare disparities between and within countries and their development. In doing so, Bosker is building on recent scientific work in which he demonstrates that the analysis of the welfare effects of international trade can be greatly improved by using mathematical insights that were previously applied in the analysis of network externalities in social networks. Bosker: ‘These methods are, whether or not in an adapted form, perfect for use in the analysis of the welfare effects of further economic integration in current, often cross-border, production chains. The predictions are easy to test empirically, based on readily available data.’
About Maarten Bosker
Maarten Bosker is involved with empirical quantification of the role of geography in economic development at both international and regional levels. In 2008, he received the Regional Science Association International Dissertation Award in New York for the best dissertation in the field of regional development. His research has been published in leading scientific journals such as the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Urban Economics, the Journal of Development Economics and Regional Science and Urban Economics. In addition to his scientific activities, he is also involved in policy work, including advisory work for the World Bank. Bosker is also affiliated with the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London and is attached to the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies.
