Maasvlakte 2: mainly wind power

Bart Kuipers, senior research port economics at Erasmus School of Economics

During the planning it was not taken into account, but five years after Maasvlakte 2 was put into use the offshore wind industry determines the image of the youngest part of the Port of Rotterdam. However, no progress has been made with the planned establishment of innovative chemical companies. Despite the fact that the implementation of the port area differs from what the Port of Rotterdam had in mind, Bart Kuipers, senior researches port economics at Erasmus School of Economics, is positive about the developments.

According to Kuipers Maasvlakte 2 is more successful than Maasvlakte 1. ‘There is already more land divested on the Maasvlakte 2 than in the first eighteen years after the construction of Maasvlakte 1.’ The value of Maasvlakte 2 lies mainly in the flexibility that the port authority Port of Rotterdam offers to respond to developments in the market, says Kuipers.
