NWO Veni grant awarded to Ruben van Beesten

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded Dr Ruben van Beesten of Erasmus School of Economics with an individual NWO Veni grant.

The NWO Veni grant, of up to 320.000 euros, is awarded to excellent junior researchers to conduct independent research and develop their ideas for a period of three years. Laureates are at the start of their scientific career and display a striking talent for scientific research.

Ruben van Beesten is an assistant professor in the field of Operations Research at the Econometrics Institute of Erasmus School of Economics. He specialises in Stochastic Programming (SP) and his research agenda covers topics such as scenario generation for SP problems, risk-averse SP, and applications in energy systems modeling. Van Beesten obtained his PhD in 2022 at University of Groningen.

About the three-year NWO Veni project

In this three-year NWO Veni project titled ‘Planning under uncertainty: constructing scenarios for the energy transition’, Van Beesten will investigate major challenges in the ongoing energy transition. To ensure robustness and cost-effectiveness of the future energy system, governments rely on energy systems models that inform investment decisions in energy infrastructure. A major challenge is that renewable energy sources are inherently unpredictable: production depends on uncertain weather factors, such as wind and sunshine. Crucial for the reliability of the models is an accurate representation of this uncertainty. This project will develop an efficient way to mathematically represent the uncertainty in such a way that it leads to models that are both computationally tractable and produce accurate solutions. This will help policy-makers plan better for the uncertain future.
