Patrick Groenen appointed new Dean of Erasmus School of Economics

The Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam has appointed Professor Patrick Groenen as Dean of Erasmus School of Economics. Patrick Groenen is Professor of Statistics and Director of the Econometric Institute (Department of Econometrics) at Erasmus School of Economics. His appointment comes into effect on 1 May 2020. He succeeds Interim Dean Professor Frank van der Duijn Schouten.

The Executive Board is convinced that with Professor Groenen it has appointed a dean with the ability to make internal and external connections and to strengthen research and education at the school even further. ‘Professor Groenen has an excellent scientific record, and with his experience within our university, he will be an excellent leader of what is the oldest school of our university. As Executive Board, we look forward to collaborating with Prof. Groenen and together achieve the ambitions of the school’, says Rector Magnificus, Prof. Rutger Engels. ‘The Executive Board is extremely grateful to Prof. Frank van der Duijn Schouten for his exceptional dedication and valuable work as Interim Dean of Erasmus School of Economics.’

About Patrick Groenen

Patrick Groenen has been Professor of Statistics at Erasmus School of Economics since 2002. His research focuses on data science methods such as support vector machines, partial least squares, multidimensional scaling and their numerical algorithms. He has co-authored publications in other fields such as geno-economics, strategy, and organisational behaviour as well as co-authored several textbooks on multidimensional scaling, published by Springer. In addition, he has published articles in top peer-reviewed journals including, amongst others, the Journal of Machine Learning Research, the Journal of Marketing Research, Psychometrika, Psychological Methods and the Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics.

Since 2014, Groenen is the Director of the Econometric Institute (Department of Econometrics) of Erasmus School of Economics. For nearly five years, until 2014, he was the Director of Doctoral Education of the Erasmus Research Institute of Management. Patrick Groenen will continue some of his teaching activities.
