Peter Bakker - 'This form of capitalism is starting to lose its "license to operate"'

Alumnus Peter Bakker leads a club of 200 influential CEOs, among whom those of Shell, Philips, Apple and Google, that tries to make the world more sustainable. The urgency is larger now than ever, he says. 'The coronavirus crisis is a stress test for the whole system.'

Last Wednesday, FD called one more time with Peter Bakker, known as former CEO of TNT and one of the first to plead for sustainability in the Dutch business industry. A couple of weeks ago, the talk was about the climate, destruction of nature and income inequality. But why would you worry about all that when the world is fighting a deadly virus? 

'Get used to it', says Bakker about the pandemic that disrupts whole societies. 'Business as usual does not exist anymore.' Global warming leads to large shocks, such as the fires in Australia and the Amazon. 'But the coronavirus crisis is a stress test for the whole system. You see what a big shock this causes'.
