Professor Dennis Huisman on the future of train scheduling

In a recent interview with Erasmus Magazine, Dennis Huisman, Professor of Public Transport Optimisation at Erasmus School of Economics, discusses how advanced algorithms contribute to improving the reliability and efficiency of the Dutch railway network.

Smart algorithms against train delays

Huisman, who combines his professorship with a parttime position as Expertise Manager Logistic Processes within the Netherlands Railways’ Digitalisation of Operations department, explains that his research focuses on developing mathematical models that help optimise timetables and efficiently deploy equipment and personnel. These models are essential for reducing delays and improving the overall passenger experience. By integrating real-time data, these algorithms can quickly respond to unexpected situations, minimising the impact of disruptions.

Aiming for a better integrated European rail system

Dennis Huisman plays a crucial role within the Netherlands Railways (NS), where he applies his academic insights in practice. His contribution is of great importance to projects aimed at improving the operational performance of rail transport in the Netherlands. In the interview with Erasmus Magazine, Huisman also emphasises the importance of international cooperation, particularly within the European innovation programme EU-Rail. This programme aims for a better integrated European rail system, with cross-border timetables and interoperability as central points. Joint efforts can improve the efficiency and sustainability of rail transport on a continental scale.
