Simon Groot, 2019 World Food Prize Laureate - 'New onion species make me very happy'

He wanted to become a wine farmer. He followed his friends' advice to start a seed company instead. 

Simon Groot is the first Dutch person to win the prestigious World Food Prize. His company East-West Seed International produces vegetable seeds for smallholders farmers in Asia and Africa. After his success, competitors started to discover the vegetable seeds market. "They are trying to steal our people."

In this interview by NRC, Simon Groot talks about his motivations, convincing Asian farmers to try his seeds and his family.
