Study Philip Hans Franses and Bert de Groot mentioned in article Harvard Political Review

Erasmus School of Economics

In the article Stealing in the Shadows: State-Level Political Corruption on the website of the Harvard Political Review (8 September 2018) reference is made to a study of Prof. Philip Hans Franses and Prof. Bert de Groot of Erasmus School of Economics, which is about corruption and inequality of wealth amongst the very rich.

According to the author, an indication of corruption is the inequality of wealth: "The enticement of economic gain via corruption wagers a huge audience in the state political scene. The feasibility of extorting public dollars to fund personal interests allows for wealthy citizens within the community to easily sway local politics. The widening wealth gap has fueled multiple in-depth studies into its effects."

In the mentioned study, Professor Philip Hans Franses and Professor Bert de Groot conclude that higher levels of corruption lead to increased inequality and poverty — meaning lowered incomes for those impoverished.
