Why does Croatia score so well at the World Cup?

Croatia became independent in the early 1990s and has only 4 million inhabitants. Yet the Croats are in the semifinals of the World Cup. Sports economist Thomas Peeters of Erasmus School of Economics tries to explain their success. He studied the influence of prosperity and size on the World Cup performance. ‘Croatia is the number one in the world in outperforming the wealth and population of the country. It is the exception to the rule.’
