What can the confidential counsellor do for me?

Confidential advisor

Students or employees can turn to the confidential advisor when they are confronted by behaviour or circumstances they experience as unwanted. Together you discuss what can be done and if necessary the confidential advisor can refer you to a third party. A report to a confidential adviser is just that, a report. The confidential adviser will listen to you and give advice. Based on the conversation and the advice you decide whether you would like to file a formal complaint, or if you would like to opt for another solution. The ownership of the steps to be taken lies with the student who files the report. The confidential adviser will provide advice, guidance and support. All consultations are confidential.

A formal complaint

You can also submit a complaint to the Complaints Commission. However, it is wise to talk things over with the confidential adviser first. He or she will discuss the various options with you, so that you can make an educated decision on what the most effective course of action is for you

Complaints procedure

The university has a complaints procedure for sexual harassment, aggressive behaviour and violence. In consultation with the confidential advisor, a complaint can be lodged with the Executive Board when other actions have failed to resolve the conflict. The complaint is handled by the complaints committee or the administrator. Administrators can be:

  • faculty deans,
  • the secretary of the university,
  • the university librarian.

The Executive Board bases its decision on the severity of the complaint and the wishes of the complainant.
