The faculty colloquia aim to cover the broad scope of Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil), in analytic and continental philosophy as well as the history of philosophy. Speakers are free in their choice of the subject-matter of their talks, but are requested to present a talk accessible to all philosophers, students notably included.

About the speaker

Hub Zwart is dean of Erasmus School of Philosophy. He studied philosophy (cum laude) and psychology (cum laude) at Radboud University Nijmegen, worked as research associate at the Centre for Bioethics in Maastricht (1988-1992) and defended his thesis in 1993 (cum laude). He was appointed as research director of the Centre for Ethics (Radboud University Nijmegen, 1992-2000) and in 2000 became full Professor / Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Science.

The focus of his research is on philosophical and ethical issues in the emerging life sciences with a focus on genomics and post-genomics fields such synthetic biology, nanomedicine and brain research, but he is also interested in research integrity and academic authorship. Proximity to and interactive involvement with researchers working in the fields of study is a core component of his approach. Special attention is given to the use of genres of the imagination (novels, plays, poetry) in research and education.

About the lecture 'What is philosophy?'

During my farewell lecture in Nijmegen (28 September 2018) I outlined, building on Kant, Hegel and others, how philosophy and other research fields may profit from a dialectical relationship of proximity and collaboration, critical dialogue and mutual learning, enriching and challenging for both, but also for society at large. During my upcoming lecture for the ESPhil colloquium, I intend to address the same topic (the relationship between philosophy and the other faculties) but with a shift of focus, namely by thinking about the future (rather than by reflecting on the past). Based on my experiences so far, I will address the question “What is philosophy?” as a key question which we (as engaged scholars and academic practitioners) are continuously forced to ask ourselves, notably in a multi-disciplinary environment such as Erasmus University. What is our vocation, our expertise? What kind of commitments and resources are involved in being a philosopher?
