Sports Economics
The elective course Sport Economics (FEB13092) is designed for students in bachelor 3 of the Economics and Business and Econometrics programs at Erasmus School of Economics. It offers both a rigorous economic analysis of the professional sports industry and an overview of economic research using sports data. Each year around 150 students learn about the peculiar economics of professional league sports and the use of contest models to analyse antitrust policy in sports. In their data projects, students investigate topics such as discrimination in sports labor markets, the role of managers, and the roots of home advantage.
Minor Sport and Society
In the minor Sport and Society (FEB53) Erasmus University students get a multidisciplinary view on important issues in sports. For this minor, ECASE cooperates with researchers from the School of Philosophy (ESPRIT) and the School of History, Culture and Communication (Sport and Nation). Each week around 80 students follow lectures from the perspective of these three social sciences on one theme. In a multidisciplinary group research project, the students tackle one issue of their choice.
Thesis supervision and research internship
Researchers of ECASE supervise master and bachelor students in economics and econometrics writing their theses on topics in sports economics. Every year two students from the bachelor research honours class at Erasmus School of Economicsperform their internship at ECASE. They get a taste of the life of a researcher as they work on their own project in close collaboration with ECASE researchers. Students with good grades at the end of the second bachelor year can apply to take part.
Other activities
ECASE organises additional educational activities such as modules and guest lectures. ECASE lecturers have provided sports economics guest lectures at the University of Georgia, University of Melbourne, German Sports University, University of Tuebingen, and the International Football Business Institute, a former spin-off of the Free University Brussels (VUB). ECASE also contributes to lectures for practitioners such as the Sports Analytics Night organized by SciSports and the Dutch Football Association KNVB.
