Bachelor Thesis Diversity Award

Camille Sinkora is the winner of the Bachelor Thesis Diversity Award is, with her thesis “Gender differences in performance of hedge fund managers.”.

According to the jury Camille’s thesis sees important implications: ‘Implementation of quotas in the sector of hedge funds by policymakers could be beneficial (to reduce discrimination) as women are underrepresented despite their equal performance.’

Master Thesis Diversity Award

Dirk van den Beuken wins the Master Thesis Diversity Award with his thesis “Gender bias and the Ultimatum Game: do agentic women face a backlash?”.

According to the jury, Dirk’s thesis is original and very relevant: ‘Findings suggests that agentic women might indeed face a backlash in negotiations about salaries and promotions from subjects with a gender bias. The jury finds the thesis original and very relevant.’

Erasmus Studio in the spotlight

The Dean’s Award is presented to the employees of Erasmus Studio. The recipients from outside the school made a strong effort on the school’s behalf during the pandemic.

Erasmus Studio has been a lifeline for Erasmus School of Economics. With the technical support of Erasmus Studio several live events were organised, such as the Bachelor Graduation Day event and our Christmas event. Also, the technical staff has helped many of our lecturers to make professional recordings for our courses.

Educational Innovation Award presented to Twan Dollevoet

The Educational Innovation Award is presented to Twan Dollevoet, who made a special contribution to the improvement and innovation of education.

Twan is a modest colleague and an excellent teacher. He pays much attention to any course he teaches, always with a focus on providing the highest educational quality for his students. Students appreciate his efforts as he consistently receives high student evaluations. He has been innovating several of his courses. He figures out how new technical and nontechnical innovations can be used and is always willing to help anyone others in using these tools as well.

Aksel Erbahar receives the Societal Impact Award

The Societal Impact Award is a prize which is presented to a faculty member who has made an important contribution to the societal impact of our research or towards a more inclusive working environment at our School. Aksel receives the award for his paper entitled “Trade Protection along Supply Chains” that has significant international impact.

In this paper he and his co-authors estimate the causal effect of trade protection along supply chains in the US during 1988-2016. The authors were invited by the United States International Trade Commission to present their paper.

Gustavo Freire, Haikun Zhu, Ana Figueiredo and Michiel Gerritse winners Top Talent Researcher Award

This year, 4 researchers have received the Top Talent Researcher Award:

  • Gustavo Freire
  • Haikun Zhu
  • Ana Figueiredo
  • Michiel Gerritse

Gustavo Freire

Gustavo Freire has done outstanding research in the past year. One of his papers has just appeared in the Journal of Financial Economics, one of the top-3 journals in finance.  The insights from the paper will enable financial market participants, such as also pension funds, to more accurately predict future market returns. Dean Patrick Groenen: ‘Gustavo also has a revise-and-resubmit at the Journal of Business and Economics Statistics (2022). This publication and his work in progress are very impressive given the young stage of his career.’

Haikun Zhu

Twelve months ago, Haikun Zhu published a paper on “Credit and Social Unrest: Evidence from 1930s China”, also in the Journal of Financial Economics. A great achievement according to Patrick Groenen: ‘His work helps in understanding the socio-political consequences of credit shocks.’ This year Haikun also obtained an R&R at Management Science for his work on online lending.

Ana Figueiredo

Last year, one of the single-authored chapters of Ana Figueiredo’s thesis was conditionally accepted at the American Economic Review: Insights. Moreover, she was asked to revise and submit a co-authored paper for the Journal of Political Economy. These two journals are amongst the very best general interest journals in economics. Dean Groenen: ‘It shows Ana’s research has the potential to not only speak to people working in her own fields of interest, but also to a much wider audience.’

Michiel Gerritse

Last but certainly not least is Michiel Gerritse, who was particularly productive in high-quality output and publications in the years 2020-2021 – single authored and in research groups across universities. Michiel combines theoretical solid underpinnings with applied econometric estimation techniques. The identification of policy effects is a strong guiding principle in all his research–from COVID-19 policy to industrial transfer policies in China. ‘This makes his research projects also strongly societal relevant’, says Patrick Groenen.
